Tycoons Explosive Third Period In Season-Opening Victory

Tycoons Explosive Third Period In Season-Opening Victory

September 29, 2022

Regular season action continued Wednesday night as the Hong Kong Tycoons appeared in their season opener versus the Kowloon Warriors. Highly anticipated game for the Tycoons as Ben MacAskill, the first overall pick, and Cole Poliziani, the fourth overall pick in the 2022 CIHL draft, were both playing their long-awaited debut.

The opening period was tightly contested. The first goal came on a nicely placed shot by Nicholas Weberg, with assists from Julian Ikeda and Ken Yee. A few minutes later the Warriors bounced back to tie the game with a nice finish by forward Francis Lam. Just over sixty seconds later, Weberg fired home his second of three goals in the game, putting the Tycoons in the lead going into the second period.

The second period was back-and-forth, beginning with David Belluche game-tying goal early in the second with an absolute cannon of a shot blowing by the goalie. Shortly after, Kevin O'Toole got on the board with a nice passing play, from Brad Wilson and Rhett Willcox. The scoring did not stop there. The Tycoons rallied back with the next three goals. Jonathan Szychta tied up the game with a great goal. Julian Ikeda, a U18 player with a nice backhand finish on a beautiful passing play by Weberg, got his first CIHL goal and followed it up with an even better celebration. The tycoons Weberg then finished a nice wrap-around goal to extend the lead. After a crazy bounce, David Belluche found himself alone in the slot and made no mistake sniping a goal to close making a one-goal game. Just before the period ends, Ben MacAskill sniped a wrister from the point putting the Tycoons up 6-4 going into the third period.

The Tycoons got off to a roaring start in the third with Jim Fanstone getting on the board. Poliziani followed up shortly after to double the score, up on Warriors 8-4. Not giving up, the Warriors scored four unanswered goals to even up the game. Kevin O'Toole tucked a nice goal shortly after Michael Wong got his first of the season on a great passing play. A few minutes later, on a beautiful individual play, Elvis Hsu brought the warriors a goal closer to tying it up. Finally, during the rally, Belluche finished his hat trick and tied the game with 6 minutes remaining. The Warriors unfortunately ran out of gas, and the Tycoons finished the game with six unanswered goals leading to the 14-8 decisive win - Matthew Nuttal scoring his first of the year on a beautiful passing play to take the lead with 5 minutes remaining. Taking over in the last 5 minutes, Poliziani scored three of the six goals on beautiful and well-placed shots. Jim Fanstone squeezed in another goal late in the game. Lastly, Jon Szychta buried with thirty seconds remaining to put the Tycoons up 14-8.

Arthur Chan faced 49 shots during the game and made a ton of remarkable saves for the Warriors, while Emerson Keung was equally as busy saving 40 of 48 shot attempts. Another exciting and fast-paced game for the 2022 CIHL season.
