The South China Sharks Overpower The Macau Aces In The Final
May 21st, 2022
The South China Sharks claimed their first title since 2019 as they shutout the Manulife Macau Aces 5-0 in the CIHL Final. Sharks' goalie Avery Gobbo became the second goalie to earn a shutout in a Final after King Ho shutout the Sharks in the inaugural year of the league back in the 2011-2012 season. It was a scoreless first period as both goalies were perfect. Aces' goalie Horrance Cheung got the call again after a solid performance in the semi-final by knocking off the Kowloon Warriors.
In the second period, the Sharks finally broke the ice with Connor Daly tipping in a shot from Jordan So at the 2:21 mark. Just 19 seconds later, Ben MacAskill came down the right wing and wristed a shot through the arms of Cheung for a 2-0 Sharks lead. The floodgates opened as just over a minute later, Jordan So was sent in on a breakaway and he made no mistake for a 3-0 lead for the Sharks. Before the period ended, So scored his second of the night as his shot found the top corner of the net past the blocker side of Cheung.
In the third period, the Aces ran out of gas and could not beat Gobbo. Gobbo was on top of his game and there was little chance that any pucks would go by him on this night. Alyssa Ho added 1 more goal for the Sharks as she banked a shot off of Cheung's pads for a commanding 5-0 lead. The Aces did have some quality chances but they ran into a hot goalie who shut the door the rest of the way.
Gobbo stopped all 25 shots he faced while Cheung stopped 45. Congrats to the South China Shark - the 2021-2022 CIHL Champions.
