Horrance Cheung Saves The Day For The Aces
May 17th, 2022
After finishing the season on a 5-game losing streak, things did not look promising for the Manulife Macau Aces who had to turn to emergency back-up goaltender Horrance Cheung in their semi-final game against the AsiaXpat Kowloon Warriors. However, Cheung turned in a solid performance and was the difference in a huge 4-3 win.
Whitney Olsen opened the scoring for the Aces on a shorthanded breakaway as he deked to his backhand before sliding the puck through the legs of Warriors' goaltender Ray Loo. On the same power play, Dave Belluche tied the game with his snap shot into the top corner past Cheung. But less than a minute later, Olsen beat Loo when he ripped a shot, also in the top corner. Both goalies seemed to be dialed in for this game and it would almost require perfect top corner shots to get goals in this game.
The Warriors tied the game at 2 with a late second period goal off an offensive zone faceoff when Josh Gordon found a loose puck and beat Cheung on his blocker side. Early in the third period, Charlie Huber put the Aces back on a top when he poked in a loose puck in front of Loo. Huber gave the Aces some insurance a few minutes later with his second of the night as he deflected a shot from U18 Owen Kwok. It was a big goal as the Warriors came back with just over 4 minutes remaining when U18 Issac Yip beat Cheung with a knuckler. There was plenty of time left on the clock for the Warriors to tie the game up but Cheung was not fazed at all. His calmness settled the Aces down and they were able to hang on for a 4-3 win, sending them to next week's CIHL Final against the red-hot South China Sharks.
Cheung finished the night with 34 saves while Loo stopped 21.
