Aces Tumble To Second Place With a 6-5 Loss To The Tycoons
May 12th, 2022
The Manulife Macau Aces have yet to win a game in 2022 and fell into second place with their loss to the Tycoons, combined with the Sharks win earlier in the night. The HKBN Hong Kong Tycoons bounced back after a big loss to the Sharks, thanks in large part to captain Jon Szychta as he notched a hat trick while adding a pair of assists.
It was the birthday boy, Aces' U18 Owen Kwok who opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the game when he picked up a loose puck in the slot and ripped a shot into the top corner past Tycoons goaltender Emerson Keung. After a slow start, the Tycoons woke up with 3 unanswered goals before the end of the period. Szychta tied the game on a delayed penalty with his deadly wrister beating Aces' goaltender Dean Tzembelikos on the glove side. Matthew Nuttall made it 2-1 for the Tycoons as he went top corner and Szychta scored his second of the night with only 42 seconds left completing a passing play with Yannick Wong and Grant Phillips.
In the second period, Tycoons U18 Jason Wong was a recipient of a friendly bounce off the back boards when he scored with Tzembelikos out of position after coming out to face the original shot from Szychta. Aces' Kenden Ng replied back less than a minute later when he picked up the puck in the slot and beat Keung. Szychta completed his hat trick with 4:25 left in the period when he slid one through the five-hole on Tzembelikos. But before the period ended, Aces' Whitney Olsen wired a shot into the top corner past Keung.
In the third period, the Aces closed the gap to 1 when Jeremy Chiang went upstairs on Keung with over 6 minutes remaining in the game. However, Yannick Wong had other ideas and put the Tycoons back up by 2 when he intercepted a weak clearing attempt and fired a shot past the stick side of Tzembelikos. The Aces did not quit with Kwok scoring his second of the night on a 2 on 1 with 34 seconds remaining. The Tycoons had to hang on at the end for the win with the Aces buzzing around the net, looking to even to score at 6. Keung stopped 40 shots while Tzembelikos stopped 27.
