A Daly Double for the Sharks

A Daly Double for the Sharks

April 25th, 2022

The South China Sharks' Conor Daly and Ben MacAskill combined for 10 points as they thumped the Macau Aces 8-3. Daly opened the scoring just 1:02 into the game when MacAskill made a great pass drawing the Aces’ defence and goaltender Dean Tzembelikos over before feeding Daly for an open net. Aces Jeremy Chiang returned from a lower body injury suffered in the final game of 2021, tied the game up at the 9:42as he was set up nicely by Aces' captain Whitney Olsen. Before the period ended, Jason Klotz regained the lead for the Sharks as finished off a passing play with Moses Chang and Grant Phillips.

In the second period, it was all Shark as they scored four goals to blow the game wide open. MacAskill scored just 49 seconds in to the period on a nice individual effort. A few minutes later, Moses Chang roofed a shot which found the back of the net and knocked the water bottle to the corner. MacAskill scored his second of the night on an end-to-end rush with just over 4 minutes remaining. Klotz made it 7-1 with a buzzer beater, jamming in a rebound with only a second left in the period.

Despite down 6-1 heading to the third, the Aces tried desperately to claw their way back and avoid a second straight loss after going 6-0 to start the season. Aces captain Whitney Olsen, got one back early in the third as he beat Sharks' goaltender Avery Gobbo. But just 15 seconds later, it was Klotz again with his hat trick goal to restore the Aces 5 goal lead.

Samuel Wong and Daly traded goals but that was it for the scoring. Gobbo was excellent in goal as he stopped 35 shots while at the other end, Tzembelikos stopped 37. With the win, the Sharks are now only 3 points back of the first place Aces. Of note, Conor Daly played along side his younger brother Luther, who was added to the roster in the supplemental draft.
