Warriors Hand Aces Their First Loss

Warriors Hand Aces Their First Loss

December 14th, 2021

The Macau Aces suffered their first loss of the season 4-1 as the Kowloon Warriors got some solid goaltending from Ray Loo and a 3-point performance from Dave Belluche. The Warriors opened the scoring just 2:09 into the game when Greg Smyth converted a rebound past Aces' goaltender Liam Moorefield-Yee. Belluche made it 2-0 while shorthanded but the Aces replied when U18 Hugo Wong's point shot went past Loo who was screened on the play. The loss of defenceman Jeremy Chiang in the first period was a huge blow to the Aces. Chiang took a hit from the Warriors Connor Quinn and did not return as he looked like he suffered an upper body injury.

This game felt like a playoff game with some big hits and battles in font of each team’s net. The Warriors defenceman U18 Brendan Choi, had one of his best games of the season as his strong play frustrated the Aces' forwards.

Clinging onto a 2-1 lead into the third period, the Warriors needed some insurance and they got some. Quinn made a nice rush into the Aces' zone and made a perfect pass to Francois Esterhuizhen who buried a shot past Moorefield-Yee for a 3-1 lead. The Warriors kept coming and padded their lead. Belluche scored his second of the night going end to end and using a wicked backhander to get one past Moorfield-Yee.

Despite the loss, the Aces are still 6 points clear of the second place South China Sharks and Warriors as both teams have identical records with 3 wins and 4 losses.
