Warriors Have No Defence for Pentz, Welsh Ends Overtime Suspense

April 22nd, 2021

Last week's CIHL action featured the struggling Scotiabank South China Sharks taking on the AsiaXPAT Kowloon Warriors. This was a rematch from two weeks prior, when the Warriors bested the Sharks 5-2. South China was hungry to get back into the win column after losing the past four games.

The game began with both teams getting a few good chances but no one found the back of the net until over half way into the opening frame. Michael Shum passed it over to Sharks leading goal scorer Ryan Chu, who fired it towards the net. Ashley Bock made the initial save but the rebound ended up on Patrik Hammaren's stick who put it into the open net. A short 18 seconds later, Devin Welsh buried a far side wrister with help from Christopher Wong and Jason Klotz. Only nine seconds after that, Eric Molander head-manned the puck to a streaking Jacob Pentz, who made a move on the defender and beat Bock with a post-and-in wrister to finish off the first period scoring.

Bradley Wilson opened up the scoring in the second frame with a powerplay goal from the point, Gauis Kwong passed it over and Wilson let it rip to tie the game at two. Welsh then put home his second of the night on a nice feed from Connor Quinn. Later, Gregory Smyth put the Warriors up 4-2 near the end of the second period with a well-placed shot, after receiving a feed from Jake McDonnell and Francois Esterhuizen.

Ryan Chu opened up the third period scoring early with a nice short side snipe from the bottom of the circle, with Ben MacAskill registering the lone assist on the play. Next, a loose puck popped out in front of the Sharks net and Esterhuizen quickly fired it five-hole on King Ho, helpers on the play went to Josh Gordon and Quinn. Shortly after, Pentz fired home his second of the night on a low wrist shot that was just above the pad of Bock, MacAskill notched another helper on the play. Less than a minute later, Pentz completed his hat trick on an unassisted partial break where he made a quick deke to shake Bock and put it in with a short side back-hander. Welsh got his third of the night on the powerplay with help from Smyth to put the Warriors up one late in the frame. The Sharks weren’t ready to give up yet, as Chu then dished it back to MacAskill who hit Pentz for the zone entry. Pentz cut to the outside and ripped a quick wrister into the top right corner for his fourth of the night.

That was all we had for regulation time, so then began the three minute 3-on-3 overtime period. It didn't take long as the Warriors held possession for the majority of the short battle. Welsh walked in on a 2-on-1 with McDonnell and fired it home short side to take the win 34 seconds into the overtime period. McDonnell and Quinn had assists on the play. Both Bock and Ho had 23 saves apiece in this back-and-forth game that ended in the Warriors favour.
